Power BI Specialist - SC Cleared (1-Month Discovery Contract)

Contract: 1 month (Discovery Phase) Location: Fully Remote (UK-based) Rate: Flexible (DOE) Clearance: Active SC Clearance Required

We're looking for an experienced Power BI Specialist with active SC clearance to deliver a focused 1-month discovery engagement. You'll review the current reporting landscape, evaluate data models and workspace structures, and provide expert recommendations to improve performance, governance, and future scalability.

This is a short but high-impact piece of work, with further project phases expected once the discovery findings are delivered.

• Lead a discovery assessment of the existing Power BI ecosystem, including datasets, reports, semantic models, and workspace organisation.
• Analyse current refresh processes, gateway setup, and performance optimisation opportunities.
• Review data modelling approaches, use of DAX, and Power Query/M transformations.
• Identify gaps in governance, deployment pipelines, permissions, and workspace strategy.
• Produce clear, actionable documentation including:
  • Current-state analysis
  • Recommendations & prioritised improvements
  • A future roadmap for BI development
• Engage with business and technical stakeholders to validate findings and understand reporting needs.

• Strong hands-on experience with Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service.
• Advanced DAX and Power Query (M) capability.
• Solid understanding of data modelling, star schemas, performance tuning and best practices.
• Experience conducting discovery, audit, or assessment style BI engagements.
• Strong documentation and communication skills.
• Comfortable working with SQL-based Back End systems.
• Active SC clearance (must be held at the start).

• Experience with Azure data services (Synapse, Data Factory, Data Lake).
• Experience with enterprise semantic models or SSAS Tabular.
• Background in consulting, analytics strategy, or BI governance.
• Understanding of deployment pipelines and workspace governance for enterprise BI.
